Grand River 5-13-2018
« on: May 13, 2018, 07:09:06 PM »

River was high when I got to It.  Then they opened up the floodgates and It got higher!

But fish were biting.  Smallmouth were, anyway.  One dink walleye.

Jerkbait in olive green, lipless crank in Helsinki shad and firetiger were the most productive.  Fish were nailing the lure after contact with the bottom but a few came on the jerkbait dead sticked ...

I think that’s a fair representation of what I was catching...

One of those fish has a hole in its mouth like it tried to swallow a grenade.

I remember that one - it was beat up.  It had a rusty hook and a split shot hanging out of its side and I dropped it too (while I was removing the rusty hook).  It swam away fine, so it must be tough.

I don't remember you getting a largemouth in the Grand before? Are they rare?

They’re in there, just not so much in the areas I fish.  But as with everything they get washed down and will hang out wherever there is a current break.

Most of them will be in backwaters above the dams.

I would say 1 out of every 100 bass I catch is a largemouth.  Like alleymad, the usual places I fish aren't really good for them, but they are around.
