Upper Peninsula Fishing / 4/3 Escanaba River and 4/2 Johnson Lake
« on: May 04, 2015, 01:16:42 PM »
4/3: Bite was very slow at the Peter Nordeen Park in Gwinn. Tried Blue and Silver Little Cleo's, which is THE go to for most folks around here, with no luck. Rooster Tails and Mepps are up there also, but you see more Cleo's on average. Switched to a pink and silver Mepps with no luck, and then finally decided to try crawlers. Kept getting little nibbles from what I imagine was probably creek chubs, then my very last cast before work I caught a 12" Brown. Shortly thereafter it started raining, so I imagine it'll be a little slow fishing in the river for the next day or so like it usually is after a rain.

4/2: Went out for a couple hours with some friends. I caught the first Largemouth, 15.5" roughly 2-2.5lbs. My buddy landed a VERY FAT 21" 5lb Largemouth. That was about the extent of our trip, since I didn't take the boat out and fishing from shore leaves you limited options to move around.

Upper Peninsula Fishing / 4/23/15 Little Trout Lake report

Took my daughter out fishing with a buddy of mine. Still don't have my license, so I pretty much baited her hook and watched her fish until she got bored and wanted to play on the playground. She had one little nibble for a split second, but nothing to show for it.  My buddy tied into what looked like a decent sized tree. A little cold out, so we called it quits after about 20 mins fishing and 10 mins on the swing set.

Same as the last two answers...

In the river I use plain ol eagle claw baitholders. .99 cents for a pack and I can lose or break em without thinking about all the money I'm losing.

For lakes I pretty much use Gamakatsu exclusively. Or whatever comes stock on my lures.

I don't mind em, depending on how big they are. If you filet and bread em they don't taste half bad fried, despite popular opinion. I'm not a huge smoked fan, unless it's trout cheeks.

My daughters first fish was a decent sized white sucker, so after that I kinda have to like em a little haha.

Well, looks like I'll be bass fishing before trout fishing (if the lakes ever clear off)!

Boone: I didn't personally read any article about it, but according to the rumor mill they've been talking about it for a couple years now. I've been told it happened once before, way back when, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do it again. It's currently scheduled online though, so no idea how this rumor came about.

I think it was the Ford river in the Gladstone/Escanaba area that was good for em, according to some of my friends. I haven't been smelting in about 15 or more years, but My dad and I did great in L'anse way back when. However, smelt aren't running like they used to up here, so you may only end up with a couple gallons.

I'm seeing the same as Tab. I don't doubt it's coming though, with all the things they have been talking about ("they" being the DNR and state legislators and the like).

I just heard they are planning on banning deer hunting for the next two years. I know they've done it before, and we do need it, but its semi-depressing all the same.

Also: Don't be the guy that leaves their miscellaneous garbage on the ice. I see a lot of posts on Facebook lately about good sportsmen risking their lives to clean up the trash that someone else was too lazy to do. If you truly love the sport, remember that old saying "leave only footprints".

PowerTeam Lures 7" Tickler. If it fails, might as well pack up and go home...

And then I don't go home. Throw a popper on, if that fails, then I start tying on everything else I have in my box :P

46 days. Is the suspense killing anyone else?

Pretty much the same as Ranger said by me (Central U.P.). More to the west (Dickinson/Iron counties) probably has less, but I haven't been over there all winter so I'm just guessing based on past experiences.

Oh, and the "rock bottom" and "catch my drift" were not intended puns lol

I had three at one point, one store bought and two home made. I lost the store bought one (I believe it was YUM! brand) on the third cast. Bail slapped shut, line snapped and I watched $20 fly off into the middle of a lake. The home made ones were made by melting down some steel sinkers and shaping them into a conical-pyramid shape (if that makes sense). I caught one bass and a perch on them, but they were unpainted.

And I also agree with pryorhunt, I watched a video on youtube and a some guy caught 4 on one cast. In my opinion it's something nifty to own, and possibly useful if you were ever in a survival situation, but just asinine to be legal for use in a tourney.

However, they do make them with less than 5 arms (or whatever you wanna call them). PowerTeam Lures sells one with 2 arms, and judging from reviews and pics it looks like it works great, as well as not being able to potentially catch 5 fish with one cast.
