I have not been very successful with catfish this year.  Iíve fished all over the place the last few night with little luck.

There is no water coming through the turbines at Webber but there is one floodgate partially open which makes the oxygenated water impossible to get to.

Seems like they are constantly opening and closing that floodgate, which is making the water rise and fall constantly - donít know if you noticed It where you were, but for a week now Iím seeing a 6Ē to foot change in level every hour.  Driving me nuts.

That being said, I have still managed some fish:

The smallie acted like he was an 8 pounder...

I fished for a couple of hours last night after work.  Got about 10 3-4" rock bass and half a dozen 8" smallmouth.  Then the fly hatch happened.

I tried getting a video on my phone but it was too dark and the light from the phone attracted a horde of bugs.  There were literally piles of flies that were three feet across floating on the surface.  All of the catfish were swimming along the top of the water with their mouths open just slurping massive piles of flies.  I saw some gigantic channel catfish - now, to wait for the bug activity to subside and catch them...

I am not going to tell anyone that I went to Webber last night and managed nothing but a turtle...   ;D

Neebo - never did get whatever that was that nailed my bait on the 3rd...

Managed two channels though.  Rockbass down from 1/2 ounce sinker on a circle hook.

Got me some walleye.  Slow cranking a white Shadow Rap with the current.  Barely crawling It along.  Also missed an unidentified fish that ran about 20 yds of line before de-hooking my lure...

I got three decent channel cats on a rock bass last night.  Lost another.  Fish are still cruising really tight to the shore after dark which is making it tough for me...

Third pic is terrible cuz hook in the hand...

I am on the mighty struggle bus of fishing.  Hit the river yesterday.  Caught two tiny bass and two tiny rock bass (that were, of course, converted into bait).  That was It.  I drowned two rock bass for not even a bite.

Only fish of any size was an unknown that absolutely crushed a green shad rap that i was banging along the bottom and then pulled a Houdini and went poof gone.

Tons of bass activity at the surface.  Loads of gar swimming a foot off shore after dark.  But whatever those bass are eating they donít seem to want any part of anything I have to offer.  And I havenít found a catfish yet...

I've been hammering fish on the Grand.  Pike, bass, rock bass, walleye, catfish - just slipping on posting updates.  Webber Dam has been on fire for me so far this year.

That being said, I fished the turn in Lyons / Muir last night and had one stinking bite.

Gar perspective info:

I am holding the fish as far out as I can;

I am holding the phone as far back as I can;

The tail was on the ground; and

I thought It was going to get off because It ran (exploded?) out into the white water and got around the buoy on the west side of the river at Webber...

Alleymad, I was looking for the partridge in a pear tree! You've caught a huge variety of fish this spring. That's the first crappie pic I ever remember you posting.

I am lacking the sunfishes and thatís about it as far as the areas in the river where I fish this year, until itís catfish time.  I doubt Iíll ever get a sturgeon out of the grand, but I have caught every other species that lives in there with the exception of a musky in the last couple trips.  I even got some dink perch the other day.

I can get crappie but I donít target them.  I know a few good spots for them right in Lansing.  Only time I really get more than one is when Iím fishing for catfish bait at night and find a group of them.

For perspective on how good the fishing has been, Iím posting maybe one out of four fish Iím catching...  my arm was literally sore and I quit fishing on Tuesday...

I have not eaten a gar although I hear they taste like chicken.  I let it go because teeth and slime...

I should've measured it and taken some good pics because it was easily a master angler.  North of 50" including over a foot of mouth...

Lots of fish.  Every single one of them on a cheapy Cotton Cordell lipless crank in firetiger.  Cast out, lift, let It fall on a tight line, feel bottom, lift, repeat...

Theyíre in there, just not so much in the areas I fish.  But as with everything they get washed down and will hang out wherever there is a current break.

Most of them will be in backwaters above the dams.

One of those fish has a hole in its mouth like it tried to swallow a grenade.

I remember that one - it was beat up.  It had a rusty hook and a split shot hanging out of its side and I dropped it too (while I was removing the rusty hook).  It swam away fine, so it must be tough.
