good ice outing
« on: March 09, 2016, 06:42:40 PM »

This post is a bit late, but had a good bluegill outing on Saturday. They only hit for about 20 minutes, but I got 9 bluegills (7 of them were just beasts! Fun on a simple jig pole w/no reel), and a 12" perch to boot. This is the second time this year where the big boys didn't start hitting until really late. Seems the little ones start earlier, and then when the light gets really low, it's all big ones. When I think about it, even in the summer, it seems like the really big fish are often very selective about when they feed, but small and medium-sized fish are more likely to feed in a wider variety of times. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just imagining things? Why do you think it is? Wariness?

Anyway, I'm just glad I was there at the right place, right time on Saturday. I got one 'gill that was 11", the biggest I've ever taken through the ice.
