Nevins or Derby Lake (Montcalm County)
« on: May 31, 2017, 10:46:47 PM »

Has anyone fished these waters? I see they are supposed to have trout in them and feel like chasing some rainbows out of my kayak. Any help is well appreciated!

Never fished them but plan to try to hit Nevins at some point this year.  That is the better of the two for rainbows from what I understand.

Neebo, heading there Saturday Morning in the kayak to try to catch some. You think they would still be shallow or moved deeper yet?

I am going to make some assumptions.

1) It is stocked
2) It is spring-fed
3) The fish are not suspending in the water column

Given those assumptions, I have had the best luck in designated trout lakes (and I will admit it has been a while since I have fished one) using the following technique:

Find a break where the water drops off to about 40 feet.  If it was my first time out, I would focus on the north side of the lake as the drop off is more abrupt.  Just me.  I don't have a depth finder so I locate depth like this by measuring my anchor rope and marking it.

Anchor and chum that drop off with corn.  Bring 10 or more cans.

Use a half crawler.  Put it on the bottom and then lift and let it fall like you were after walleye.  Stay vertical.

CAVEAT - we do this at night, with a lantern hanging over the side of the boat.  Tear rainbows up if you can find the depth they are holding at.

Where they are in the water will depend on the water temp of the lake.  If the shallows are warmed up over around 60 they will likely have moved a little deeper.  Trout are not warm water fish.  Chumming is fine but I would start with spinners or dry flies in the shallows first in the morning and move deeper as the day progresses or if nothing is biting.  I have seen some light mayflies and caddis recently so I would assume, like the stream by me is currently, white or a similar light color would work well.  If you are dropping down to deeper water a piece of crawler, small twister tail, or even a smaller stickbait would work.

Might have a chance to visit a friend at Montcalm County and kayaking at the Derby Lake. Just have to ready the ready the backrack headache racks and new tires when this visit materialize. Did you go fishing there?
